Standard fishing toys use a small metal hook or magnetic tip at the end of the line — which is exactly why almost every one of them carries a 3+ age label. Those metal parts are precisely what babies put in their mouths. The Little Fisherman Fishing Set skips magnets entirely and uses velcro instead. That's what makes this genuinely safe for 6 months.
At 8 months, most babies aren't fishing yet — and that's completely fine. They love squeezing the soft fish, carrying them around, and exploring the textures. The velcro rod becomes the main event around 12–14 months when their grip and coordination are ready for it.
Yes, the ocean mat folds into itself and becomes the carry bag — fish go in the front pocket, cups stack inside, the fishing rod tucks in alongside. All 21 pieces in one bag about the size of a small tote.
They will, and that's fine. The fish are made from soft felt and fabric with reinforced stitching and no removable parts. The velcro patch on the belly is flat and smooth. Nothing pulls off, nothing pokes, nothing sharp. They wipe clean easily and hold up to everything a baby throws at them.
Two-year-olds are the sweet spot. They can fish independently, sort fish by color into matching cups, count fish into numbered cups, and stack the cups into towers. Plenty of kids start inventing their own games on top of that. The open-ended setup means the play gets more creative as they grow — same toy, richer game.
